Superiority or Inferiority?

Another socially related issue is the sense of inferiority. A young child has the experience of being the smallest of all. When he’s a baby, he can’t walk, talk, or eat on his own, and he may feel inferior as a result. Adler stated in his early articles that this experience is necessary for development, but he came to the conclusion that it can be avoided, especially if we understand and accept that a child, even when very young, needs to feel essential and part of a team. From our child’s perspective, he can decide if he feels inferior based on his dynamic in the group he lives in, his response to it, and the people he cares about the most. That’s why we need to have a good relationship with our children; otherwise, how will we know if he feels that way? Everything the child does is socially related. He does it for people and receives responses from them. He simply wants to feel meaningful and essential to his family.
